VIOLIN FAMILY

I'm sure you've noticed there are many other instruments that look very similar to the violin. That's because the violin, viola, cello and double bass all from what we refer to as the violin family.

The violin family is a collection also as bowed string instruments. This includes all wooden instruments that naturally have strings and are played with a bow. It's the largest instrument family in an orchestra, usually spanning about half its total size. Many people know and love these instruments.

  • The Violin is the smallest member of the violin family and produces the highest pitches.
  • The viola is larger and plays deeper notes than the violin.
  • The Cello is larger yet, and plays even lower sounds.
  • The Bass is the largest and plays the lowest notes.

VIOLIN
The violin is the smallest member of the family. It boats the highest range. As you may already know, the violin is tuned as follows; G-D-A-E perfect fifths, like almost all other family members. The violin quickly gained popularity among both street musicians and nobles.

Viola
The viola is about one seventh larger than the violin and turned a fifth lower. It is the only original member of the violin family to exist continuously in the same size. It's tone is deeper and less brilliant than that of the violin.

Cello
The cello, originally called the violincello, is about twice as large as the violin and has four strings tuned an octave lower than those of the viola. The cello was, from its beginning, an important member of the orchestra and is also indispensable in chamber music.

Double bass
Four- or five stringed instrument, played upright; the largest member of the violin family, it also has the lowest range.
